Energy Savings for a Local Hospital

Hospitals save lives, so every piece of building equipment must be in working order to avoid downtime or shutdowns. When repairing and replacing boiler equipment for any hospital, the goal is to maintain efficiency without sacrificing quality.

At this hospital, they recognized a need to replace their burner, boiler, and economizer, as they had all begun to age out.

Working with the hospital, ACSI Mechanical Group replaced and installed new, economical, and energy-efficient equipment.

Energy Saving Equipment Installation

The Challenge

The hospital facility couldn’t shut down, so the utilities needed to remain operational. At the same time, the older unit must be safely disconnected and removed.

Because it was important for the hospital to remain open and operational while we installed the new equipment, our team needed to ensure everything went smoothly.

Fortunately, the hospital has three boilers: one primary, one secondary, and a backup. This allowed ACSI Mechanical Group to complete the project without worrying about downtime.

The Solution

ACSI Mechanical Group’s goal was to replace aging equipment with new, energy-efficient equipment to save the hospital money in the long term while avoiding downtime in the building.

A boiler is only as efficient as the burner it is mated to, and ACSI Mechanical Group chose one of the most efficient burners available. The old burner was at most 69 to 76 percent efficient.

The commodity savings are enormous with the new burner, which operates at 80 to 85 percent efficiency.

The client also elected to install an economizer to capture further savings. This piece of equipment uses the waste heat from the new boiler stack for two purposes.

It exchanges heat from one economizer circuit to heat domestic water for the hospital. A second circuit pre-heats the boiler feedwater, as a standard economizer would.

The hospital quickly noticed that the first economizer circuit was working better than initially anticipated.

To help with efficiency upgrades, utility companies offer incentives of up to $500,000.00. It all depends on the utility company and the type of service or project you tackle.

“We have been encouraging energy efficiency for years — before the utility companies started offering rebates,” states Frank Lacny, president of ACSI Mechanical Group. “Being efficient just makes sense.”

ACSI Mechanical Group is familiar with the rules of the various programs and is dedicated to helping its clients get all the funding they can qualify for.
